How to Clean Boxing Gloves and Prevent Bad Odours

Wipe your gloves after every training session and allow them to dry completely in a ventilated area. Never leave wet gloves sealed inside a sports bag.

Key takeaways

  • Odour comes from moisture trapped in the lining, so drying is the actual fix.
  • Do not machine-wash or soak boxing gloves.
  • Dry away from direct heat - radiators, hairdryers and hot cars damage materials.
  • Wash hand wraps separately after every session, or they re-soil clean gloves.
  • Store gloves only when they are completely dry.

What to do immediately after training

The five minutes after a session determine how your gloves smell and how long they last. The goal is simple: get the moisture out before it sits.

  1. Open the wrist closure fully.
  2. Wipe away surface moisture.
  3. Air-dry the gloves away from direct heat.
  4. Clean hand wraps separately.
  5. Store the gloves only when fully dry.

The most common mistake is skipping straight from the session to a closed bag. A sealed sports bag is warm, damp and unventilated, which is the environment odour-causing bacteria need.

Take gloves out of your bag when you get home, every time. This single habit does more than any cleaning product.

How to clean the exterior

Wipe the outside with a cloth lightly dampened with water, then dry it immediately with a clean cloth. Work in one direction rather than scrubbing, and pay attention to the closure area, where sweat collects.

  • Use a soft cloth, not an abrasive pad.
  • Damp, not wet - the glove should never absorb water.
  • Dry straight after wiping rather than leaving surface moisture to sit.
  • On printed or decorated areas, wipe gently and do not scrub.

Do not use bleach, solvents or alcohol-based cleaners. Cleaning products beyond water and a mild soap have not been confirmed as safe for the materials KCG uses, so nothing stronger is recommended here. If you want to use a specific product, check with the team first.

How to dry the interior

The lining holds most of the moisture, and it is also the part people skip. Push a dry cloth or paper towel into each glove and into the finger area to absorb what is there, then leave the gloves open to air.

  1. Undo the closure completely so the cuff stays open.
  2. Press a dry cloth into the hand compartment and the finger area.
  3. Stand the gloves palm-up, or hang them cuff-down, in a ventilated space.
  4. Leave them until the lining is dry to the touch throughout - usually several hours.
  5. Only then put them away.

Keep them away from direct heat sources while drying. Radiators, hairdryers, direct sun and hot cars all dry the surface faster than the inside, and heat damages materials and any printed decoration.

Never machine-wash, tumble-dry or submerge boxing gloves. Water soaks into the padding, takes days to leave, and can break down the internal construction.

How to reduce odours

Odour is a moisture problem, not a cleaning problem. Anything that shortens the time gloves spend damp will do more than any spray.

  • Wear hand wraps every session - they absorb sweat that would otherwise reach the lining.
  • Dry the gloves open and out of the bag after every session.
  • Use cedar glove inserts or a moisture-absorbing product between sessions.
  • Rotate two pairs if you train daily, so each pair dries fully.
  • Wash your wraps every session.

If gloves already smell, the cause is usually a lining that has not dried fully for a while. Several consecutive days of proper drying, with wraps washed each time, improves it more reliably than trying to mask it.

Interior sprays and deodorising products are widely used, but no specific product has been confirmed as safe for KCG glove materials. If you want to use one, check with the team before applying it inside the glove.

How to clean hand wraps

Wraps should be washed after every session. Reusing dirty wraps re-soils clean gloves immediately, so washing gloves while reusing wraps achieves very little.

  1. Unroll the wraps fully and fasten the hook-and-loop tab to itself so it cannot catch.
  2. Put them in a mesh laundry bag to stop them tangling.
  3. Wash on a cold or cool cycle.
  4. Hang to dry - heat damages the elastic in semi-elastic wraps.
  5. Roll them once dry, ready for the next session.

Owning two or three pairs makes this easy: one in use, one drying, one clean.

What not to do

Common mistakes and what they cause
Do notWhy
Machine-wash or soak glovesWater enters the padding, takes days to leave, and can break down the internal construction
Tumble-dryHeat damages materials and decoration
Dry on a radiator or with a hairdryerDries the surface while the inside stays wet, and heat-damages the material
Leave gloves in a closed bagKeeps the lining damp, which is what causes odour
Use bleach or solventsNot confirmed safe for these materials; can discolour panels
Train without hand wrapsSends sweat straight into the lining and removes hand support
Store gloves while still dampOdour and material breakdown continue in storage

Long-term storage

Before storing gloves for more than a few weeks, make sure they are completely dry, then keep them somewhere cool, dry and ventilated with the closures loose so air can circulate inside.

  • Confirm the lining is dry throughout before packing anything away.
  • Avoid sealed plastic containers and vacuum bags.
  • Keep them out of direct sunlight, which fades and dries materials.
  • Avoid unheated garages and other spaces with large humidity swings.
  • Do not store anything heavy on top of them - the padding holds its shape better uncompressed.

Check them before returning to training. Padding that has gone flat or uneven over the knuckles means the gloves are no longer protecting your hands properly, regardless of how the outside looks.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put boxing gloves in the washing machine?

No. A washing machine soaks the padding, which then takes days to dry, and the process can break down the internal construction of the glove.

Wipe the exterior and dry the interior by hand instead. Hand wraps are the part that goes in the machine.

How do I get the smell out of boxing gloves?

Dry them properly after every session and wash your hand wraps every time. Odour comes from moisture held in the lining, so removing the moisture is the actual fix.

Wipe the lining with a dry cloth, leave the gloves open in a ventilated space until dry throughout, and use a moisture-absorbing insert between sessions. Masking the smell without drying the glove does not work for long.

How long do boxing gloves take to dry?

Several hours when left open in a ventilated space, and longer in humid conditions. They are dry when the lining feels dry to the touch throughout, not just at the cuff.

Do not speed this up with direct heat. Heat dries the surface while the inside stays wet and damages the materials at the same time.

Is it bad to leave gloves in a gym bag?

Yes, and it is the most common cause of both odour and early wear. A closed bag stays warm and damp, which is exactly the environment bacteria need, and gloves left in one can stay wet inside for days.

Take them out as soon as you get home and leave them open to air.

How often should I wash hand wraps?

After every session. Wraps absorb most of the sweat from a session, and putting unwashed wraps back into clean gloves undoes the cleaning immediately.

Wash cold in a mesh bag and hang to dry - a tumble dryer damages the elastic.

When should I replace boxing gloves?

When the padding over the knuckles feels flat, hard or uneven, when you can feel your knuckles through the front of the glove, or when the wrist no longer holds firm with the closure fastened.

Gloves fail from the inside, so judge them by the padding rather than by how the outside looks.
